Artwork’s Description - A Pause in the Wild (1993) is a deeply contemplative piece that captures a quiet moment of human stillness amidst the nature of northern India. Unable to find traditional canvas at the time, the artist painted this piece on “canvas cloth” : a textured cloth once used by tailors beneath women’s garments. At the heart of the composition sits a lone woman resting beside her earthen pot, pausing from her day’s journey. Two deer approach her quietly, drawn by her stillness. The moment feels both ordinary and extraordinary, both mundane and beautiful.
